Potato printing

Potato printing is a fun and simple craft for children of all ages that the whole family can enjoy after school, during the holidays, or on rainy weekends. Using just a potato and some paint, kids can get messy and creative, producing potato prints that really are works of art. Using an object as a stamp is a great way to create pictures that are truly unique.

cut potatoes

Cut your potatoes into fun shapes and sizes that are unique to you. Think of some of your favorite scenery and find the basic shapes that they are made of. We have chosen to cut triangles and half moons, for a nighttime mountain scene.

Dip

You may choose to dip your potatoes into the paint, or for a neater more controlled method take a paint brush and paint your pigment onto your potatoes.

Stamp

Now with the potato, "inked up," you may stamp on whatever surface you have chosen. Be creative, apply pressure, or lightly stamp to reveal the different tones the potato can make. You can also take the back of your paint brush and carve into the potato to reveal a negative space in your shape. Hang your masterpiece to dry overnight, and enjoy!
